Wal-Mart remained a global leader in the ensuing years, and in the 2010s it began to acquire numerousĀ e-commerceĀ businesses, including Jet.com (2016) and Moosejaw (2017). In 2018 the company changed its name to Walmart.
Its extreme growth did not occur without controversy. Walmart has been criticized for contributing toĀ urban sprawlĀ by forcing out of business local merchandisers, many of whom were unable to compete with the companyāsĀ economy of scale. Walmart has also been criticized forĀ perpetuatingĀ low wages; its workers make significantly less than the average retail worker, in large part because of the companyās anti-unionĀ stance. Its merchandising practices are nonetheless emulated by other retailers.

At some point, Sam Walton made the decision to achieve higher sales volumes by keeping sales prices lower than his competitors by reducing his profit margin. Inspired by the successes of other discount department store chains, Walton opened the second store inĀ Harrison, Arkansas, that year. Responsible for the purchase and maintenance of signage, Walton’s assistant, Bob Bogle, came up with the name “Wal-Mart” for the new chain.Ā By 1967, the company grew to 24 stores across the state ofĀ Arkansas, and had reachedĀ $12.6 million in sales, and by 1968, the company opened its first stores outside of Arkansas inĀ Sikeston, Missouri, andĀ Claremore, Oklahoma.
The company’s firstĀ stock splitĀ occurred in May 1972 at a market price of $47. By this time, Walmart was operating in fiveĀ states:Ā Arkansas,Ā Kansas,Ā Louisiana,Ā MissouriĀ andĀ Oklahoma, and expanded intoĀ TennesseeĀ in 1973, andĀ KentuckyĀ andĀ MississippiĀ in 1974. In February 1988, company founder Sam Walton stepped down asĀ chief executive officer, and David Glass was named to succeed him. Walton remained on as Chairman of the CorporateĀ Board of Directors, and the company also restructured their senior management positions, elevating a cadre of executives to positions of greater responsibility.
Also in 1988, the first Wal-Mart Supercenter was opened inĀ Washington, Missouri. The supercenter concept features everything contained in an average Walmart discount store, in addition to a tire and oil change shop, optical center, one-hour photo processing lab, portrait studio, and numerous alcove shops such as banks,Ā cellular telephoneĀ stores, hair and nail salons, video rental stores, andĀ fast foodĀ outlets.
By 1988, Wal-Mart was the most profitable retailer in the United States,Ā though it did not outsell K-Mart and Sears in terms of value of items purchased until late 1990 or early 1991.
By 1988, Walmart was operating in 27Ā states, having expanded intoĀ Arizona,Ā Michigan,Ā Ohio,Ā West Virginia,Ā New Jersey, andĀ Wyoming. By 1990, they expanded intoĀ CaliforniaĀ (which marked Walmart officially becoming a fully nationwide retailer),Ā Nevada,Ā North Dakota,Ā Pennsylvania,Ā South Dakota, andĀ Utah.
